Where It Started.

HUBS was founded in 2019 by members of the Harvard College Class of 2021 Derek Wu, Lexi Mealey, Samantha Frenkel-Popell, and Sarah Gill, who were moved to action both by national political gridlock and the absence of bipartisan organizations on campus.

Completed in early 2020, HUBS drafted a bill currently being considered for implementation by the Massachusetts State Legislature. The criminal justice bill seeks to reform license suspension policy and address the implications of court debt for the right to drive.

Spring 2020 saw HUBS focus its efforts on bringing in renowned and world class speakers to discuss the bipartisanship at large. We also authored several policy critiques in both the Harvard Political Review and Independent Voter News.

Since its inception, HUBS has been led by three executive board administrations, with each successive council growing in breadth and scope. You can view profiles for our previous Executive Board members at the bottom of this page.

What We Do.

1. General Meetings

Each week, members convene to discuss current events, engage in internal policy debates, welcome guest speakers, and coordinate short-term projects as well as long-term organizational strategies. Weekly meetings prioritize collaborative discourse strategies and foster community.

2. Pioneer Policy

Each semester, members are empowered to engage in organization-wide policy projects targetting either specific issues or relevant trends. This has included researching and drafting legislation, publishing analysis and commentary on existing policy, as well as conducting information campaigns for local referenda during election years.

3. Speakers and Networking

During individual events and general meetings, HUBS hosts world-class scholars, politicians, and journalists to converse with members on issues from intellectual property, to Ranked Choice Voting, to the Supreme Court, and even foreign policy.
