Harvard Undergraduates for Bipartisan Solutions is a student group enfranchising the overlooked majority of citizens who clamor for meaningful policy and productive discourse in a time of national urgency.

It’s no secret that we live in a polarized society. As algorithms breed echo chambers, alienation influences political violence, and wars spill across borders, it’s all too easy to lose faith in the institutions that we have traditionally held dear. It’s all too easy to imagine that we have reached a point of no recourse, an America with irreconcilable differences between Republicans and Democrats. Indeed, at Harvard, it’s tempting to imagine that this cynicism of incivility has permeated the university’s commitment to ideological diversity and intellectual vitality.

At Harvard Undergraduates for Bipartisan Solutions (HUBS), we beg to differ. Just as social media amplifies citizens’ sense of partisanship, vocal minorities on campus distract from the fundamental reality underpinning Crimson life: students are nowhere near as polarized as they may seem. We all root for the football team. We all wait in the Berryline queue. Even as we dare to step into the crucible of culture wars, students nonetheless display a remarkable commitment to respectful discourse, highlighted by successful interfaith initiatives, civil in-class debates, and resoundingly resolute research initiatives. Illuminating this shared reality has defined our past year at HUBS. At the forefront of Harvard’s “exhausted majority”, we have spearheaded a vast array of initiatives aimed at depolarizing both our peers and the country at large, whether it’s our ten hot-button discourse dinners with high-ranking political figures and impassioned students, our bipartisan policy programs at state and federal levels, our candid yet respectful weekly meetings, or our burgeoning podcast series with some of America’s most prominent bipartisan voices.
